PRS and Land Rover Team Up for Eight New John Mayer Silver Sky Colors

PRS has announced the Silver Sky Defender Color Collection, a new limited-edition run of John Mayer's signature model dressed in paint colors borrowed from the Land Rover Defender. The collection was revealed on September 23, 2026, and it spans both the US-made Silver Sky and the more affordable SE Silver Sky — eight new colorways in total, each one personally selected by Mayer.

"Teaming up with Land Rover to offer the Silver Sky guitar in their legendary Defender colors is a dream come true," Mayer said in the announcement. "I've always chosen colorways based on objects and materials that inspire me in the world, and as a collector and lover of Defenders, this collaboration is the perfect crossover between two great passions of mine."

It's a fitting crossover for an artist whose signature finishes have always read like a mood board. But this time the palette comes with a hood ornament.

The four heritage colors — and the one from Mayer's own driveway

The US-made Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition comes in four heritage Defender colors: Arles Blue, Willow Green, Portofino Red and Sandglow Yellow. The one with the deepest personal connection is Arles Blue — it's the color of the Defender Mayer has owned for nearly two decades, and PRS says that guitar was the starting point for the whole collection.

The design language leans on what Land Rover does best with the Defender: pairing a vibrant body color with a contrasting black or white roof. That contrast is what shaped the look of these guitars, which otherwise keep the Silver Sky formula fans know — alder body, bolt-on maple neck with the 635JM-R profile, rosewood fingerboard and three 635JM single-coils.

What the US-made limited editions get

Each of the four Core colors is capped at 500 examples worldwide. The US-made models come with a white pickguard and control knobs, a headstock painted to match the body, and a special neckplate featuring the Defender logo and the color's name. They ship in exclusive hard cases carrying the Defender wordmark.

That matching painted headstock is the visual signature of the collection — it changes the guitar's profile more than any trim detail, and it's the kind of choice that tends to divide opinions in exactly the way Silver Sky launches always have.

As for price, the Silver Sky Defender LTD has been listed at around $3,200 in the US and €3,699 in Europe.

The SE versions break new ground

The SE Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition takes a more contemporary approach with four finishes: Petra Copper, Sedona Red, Carpathian Grey and Woolstone Green.

The SE models bring two firsts. They wear black pickguards and black control knobs — the first time any Silver Sky model has done so — and they come with Defender-branded neckplates and an exclusive PRS/Defender gig bag instead of a hard case.

Unlike the US-made guitars, the SE versions aren't limited to a fixed number. They'll be available during a limited ordering period running through mid-2027.

Guitars and cars go way back

If the pairing sounds odd, guitar history says otherwise. Electric guitar makers have borrowed from car culture since the beginning — Fender built its identity on automotive-style custom colors, and Gibson famously hired industrial designer Raymond Dietrich, whose background was in Chryslers, to shape the Firebird's lines.

Mayer's Defender collaboration is the same instinct with a modern badge on it: take a color language people already have feelings about and let it live on a guitar. Judging by the reaction to the teasers that preceded the announcement, plenty of players already have feelings about this one.

The British Racing Green guitars that aren't for sale

Alongside the eight retail colorways, PRS will produce a small number of Silver Sky Defender guitars in British Racing Green. These won't be available to buy. Instead they'll be used for fundraising efforts supporting the Defender Service Awards and Mayer's Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health.

A colorful year for the Silver Sky

2026 has been generous to players who like options. In January, PRS rolled out the Mojave Brown Satin and Black Plum Satin finishes — including the Grateful Dead-inspired brown model Mayer had been quietly playing on stage — and now September brings an entire Defender family.
