Why they matter
Funk-rock rhythm mastery hiding one of the most complete techniques in rock.
Extreme were filed under hair metal because of when they arrived, which obscured the fact that Bettencourt is one of the best rhythm guitarists of his generation. The funk-rock parts on Pornograffitti are sixteenth-note-accurate, heavily muted and rhythmically sophisticated in a way almost nothing else on rock radio in 1990 was.
His lead playing combines Van Halen-derived flash with a genuinely melodic sense, and 'Get the Funk Out' and 'He-Man Woman Hater' are still technique benchmarks.
'More Than Words' — two acoustic guitars and two voices — made them famous and permanently mislabelled them as a ballad band.
The sound
Punchy, dynamic ADA/Marshall crunch with an unusually strong midrange
Get the Funk Out
Bright and dry with a strong upper midrange so every muted sixteenth reads clearly.
He-Man Woman Hater
The lead tone is compressed enough to sustain but articulate enough for the sweeps.
More Than Words
Two acoustics, close-miked, with the percussive body hits left in the recording.

Style & technique
How you recognise the playing
Funk rhythm precision
Muted sixteenth-note picking patterns with hard-panned dynamics — closer to Nile Rodgers than to metal.
Percussive muting
Left-hand mutes used as a drum part inside the riff.
Hybrid lead technique
Tapping, sweeping and legato all present but deployed sparingly.
Acoustic arrangement
Genuinely composed acoustic parts, not strummed accompaniment.
