For a decade, Boss Katana amps have been the default answer to "I need a loud, flexible solid-state combo that doesn't sound like a toy." What the family did not have — until today — was an obvious home-sized step between the tiny Katana-Mini world and the stage-ready Katana-50 / 100 / Artist boxes. On October 29, 2026, Boss closed that gap with the Katana-25: a compact 25-watt, 1x8 open-back combo aimed at everyday home playing, priced at $199.99 at authorized U.S. dealers.

Six amp characters, more than 60 Boss effects (up to five at once), Bluetooth audio streaming, the BOSS Tone Studio app, a built-in tuner, tap tempo, USB-C recording and a Power Control that drops the amp to 0.5 watts for cranked feel at apartment volume. That is a lot of checklist for two hundred bucks, and it explains why Guitar World called it "the Katana that's always been missing."

What Boss Announced

Roland's U.S. press release (Los Angeles, October 29, 2026) introduces Katana-25 as the latest addition to Boss's best-selling Katana amplifier lineup, positioned as a compact 25-watt amp for home playing that helps "new and returning guitarists get started with confidence." The money line in the release is practical rather than mystical: plugging into an amplifier for the first time is a defining musical moment, and Katana-25 is meant to make that moment accessible.

Boss's own product page is more player-facing: "Your tone. Dialed." Highlights pulled straight from the official U.S. page and press release:

  • Compact home amplifier with Katana tone
  • BOSS Tube Logic design philosophy
  • Custom 8-inch speaker + 25-watt reactive analog power amp
  • Six amp characters with variations (one tuned for acoustic-electric)
  • 60+ Boss effects, up to five simultaneous (full library via Tone Studio)
  • Power Control: MAX (25W) or 0.5W
  • Tone Setting memories: 20 ready-to-play presets + 10 empty user slots (30 memories total per the spec table)
  • Tap tempo, onboard tuner
  • Bluetooth (A2DP audio + GATT MIDI over BLE)
  • BOSS Tone Studio app with Tone Exchange and Session (YouTube play-along with automatic Tone Setting changes)
  • Headphones / Rec out
  • Class-compliant USB-C audio interface
  • Optional wired FS-series footswitch or FS-1-WL / EV-1-WL wireless controllers

Why a 25-Watt Katana Matters

Katana launched in 2016. Boss and Roland materials treat the line as one of the company’s biggest amp successes of the last decade. The important product point is simpler. Players already trusted Katana for practice rooms, rehearsals and club stages. What they kept asking for was a version that lived on a desk or bedroom floor without the footprint of a Katana-50 or the toy-adjacent limits of the smallest Minis.

MusicRadar put it bluntly: the Katana-25 is "the ideal size and spec'd for home practice," and "this little thing costs just $199." Guitar World framed it as Boss asserting authority in the competitive practice-amp market. Roland's Japanese corporate news dated the Japanese launch for November 14, 2026, while the U.S. press release says the Katana-25 is "available now at authorized BOSS retailers for $199.99." Regional street dates can differ — if you are outside the U.S., check local Boss/Roland timing.

Tube Logic in a Bedroom Box

Boss does not claim there are tubes inside the Katana-25. It claims the Tube Logic design philosophy: the speaker and the 25-watt reactive analog power section are meant to interact the way a tube amp's power section and speaker do, with "rich, warm bass, sweet high-end detail, and punchy dynamic response." That language will be familiar to anyone who has played a Katana-50 or Katana-100. The bet is that the feel survives the shrink to an 8-inch open-back cabinet.

The cabinet story is part of the pitch. Boss says the open-back construction, careful bracing and custom 8-inch speaker are tuned together so the compact box still sounds "full" and "satisfying." Official dimensions (including handle and rubber feet):

SpecValue
Rated power25 W
Speaker1 × 8" (20 cm) custom
Width360 mm / 14-3/16"
Depth180 mm / 7-1/8"
Height310 mm / 12-1/4"
Weight4.8 kg / 10 lbs 10 oz
Power consumption25 W
Memories30
DisplayGraphic LCD, 160 × 80, backlit

That weight is the sleeper feature. Ten and a half pounds is backpack-and-train territory, not "borrow a friend's hatchback" territory. For apartment players, students and anyone stacking a practice amp next to an interface, that matters as much as the preset count.

Six Amp Characters and 60-Plus Effects

Boss’s launch materials describe six amp characters with variations covering “sparkling clean” through high-gain “brown sound,” plus a dedicated acoustic-electric character. Individual character names were not listed in the product page or press release we used, so this article sticks to those official categories rather than inventing labels.

What is verified:

  • Six amp characters with variations
  • One character voiced for acoustic-electric instruments
  • Coverage claims spanning pop, blues, country, rock and high-gain metal
  • Panel controls for Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, plus Master Volume and Power Control
  • Tone Setting section with Select knob, Edit/Tuner, Effects and Tap buttons
  • Full effect list and deep editing inside BOSS Tone Studio
  • Up to five effects at once

If you already live in Boss's pedal universe — and TGP readers who know the Boss DS-1's long history certainly do — the appeal is obvious. Katana-25 is not "an amp with a couple of digital effects." It is a Boss multi-effects brain bolted to a responsive practice power amp and speaker.

Power Control, Bluetooth and the Session Feature

Power Control is the feature that will keep neighbors from filing complaints. Flip between full 25-watt punch and a 0.5-watt mode that Boss says keeps cranked-amp feel at bedroom levels. That idea already exists on larger Katanas; shipping it on the home model is the point.

Bluetooth does two jobs. First, A2DP audio streaming so you can jam to phone or tablet tracks through the speaker or headphones. Second, Bluetooth Low Energy MIDI-style communication with Tone Studio for editing without a cable (USB-C remains the recording/interface path).

The app's Session feature is the sleeper for learners. Boss says you can browse and play YouTube content inside Tone Studio and set timeline markers that automatically change Tone Settings as the video plays — clean verses, dirty choruses, without tap-dancing on the panel. Guitar World highlighted the same workflow: focus on playing instead of preset ballet.

That puts Katana-25 in conversation with other modern practice ecosystems TGP has covered, from Positive Grid's Spark world to compact modelers like the Zoom Neurig. Different philosophies, same reader question: how little gear do I need on the bedroom floor to stay inspired?

Connectivity: What Is — and Isn't — on the Jack Panel

Official U.S. connectors list:

  • INPUT — 1/4"
  • FOOT SW / EXP PEDAL — 1/4" TRS
  • USB COMPUTER — USB Type-C (class-compliant audio)
  • PHONES / REC OUT — stereo mini
  • AC IN

Optional controllers listed by Boss: FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7, FS-1-WL; expression options including Roland EV-5, BOSS EV-30, FV-500L/H, EV-1-WL.

Effects loop: none. The official Boss U.S. product page lists INPUT, FOOT SW/EXP PEDAL, USB-C, PHONES/REC OUT and AC IN — no FX loop.

Also missing versus some competitors: a dedicated analog aux/line input separate from Bluetooth (GearNews called that out as a wish-list item). If your phone refuses Bluetooth, plan on headphones-out from another device into a workaround, or use USB audio workflows.

Who the Katana-25 Is For

Strong fit

  • Home and apartment players who want real Katana voice without a Katana-50 footprint
  • Beginners and returning players who need presets, a tuner, Bluetooth jam-alongs and an app that teaches by doing
  • Intermediate players who want Boss effects on tap without a separate GT unit for bedroom work
  • Content makers who need USB-C recording and silent headphone practice
  • Anyone shopping a gift amp around $200 who does not want a disposable starter box

Weaker fit

  • Players who need an effects loop for a favorite pedal chain
  • Gigging players who want more than 25 watts and an 8-inch speaker against a loud drummer — look at Katana-50 / 100 / Artist
  • Pure tube traditionalists who will never accept solid-state, Tube Logic or not
  • Stereo FRFR / modeler stage rigs (different tool; see Helix / Neurig / Spark CAB conversations elsewhere on TGP)

Katana-25 is not trying to replace a Tone Master-class stage amp or a floor modeler. It is trying to be the Katana you actually leave plugged in next to the couch.

FAQ

Is Katana-25 a tube amp? No. It is a Boss modeling / Tube Logic solid-state design with a reactive analog power section.

Can it replace my pedalboard? For bedroom and streaming practice, the onboard Boss effects cover a lot. For a personal board of boutique dirt and modulation, you will still want pedals in front of the amp — Katana-25 has no effects loop.

Does it work with acoustic-electric guitars? Boss includes a dedicated amp character tuned for acoustic-electric instruments.

Can I record with it? Yes. Class-compliant USB-C audio to computer or mobile device, plus a phones/rec mini jack.

Is the Tone Studio app required? No for basic playing — it ships with 20 presets and panel editing — but the app unlocks the full effect list, deep editing, Tone Exchange and Session.

How loud is 25 watts on an 8-inch speaker? Enough for home, dorm and small rehearsal in many contexts; not a substitute for a 50/100-watt Katana against a hard-hitting drummer. Use the 0.5W mode when the walls are thin.

The Bottom Line

Boss did not invent a new category today. It finished one. Katana-25 is the home-sized Katana the lineup has implied for years: Tube Logic feel, serious Boss effects, modern app/Bluetooth/USB conveniences and a two-hundred-dollar street price that undercuts a lot of shallower practice amps. The tradeoffs are honest — 25 watts, one 8-inch speaker, no effects loop — and for the audience Boss named, those are acceptable tradeoffs.

If you have been waiting for a Katana that lives next to a laptop instead of a drum riser, this is the one to audition first.
